Nilo B. Alcala II, 2007 Gawad Chanselor para sa Natatanging Mag-aaral awardee, recently won the 2009 Polyphonos Young Composer Award, an international choral composition competition.
Now on its third year, The competition had 128 entries from all over the world. It was organized by The Esoterics, a vocal ensemble based in Seattle, USA.
Alcala received a US$1,000 commission for a 5-minute new work that The Esoterics will premiere in their 2009 concert season.
An active chorister, he was member and composer-in-residence of the UP Madrigal singers, Asia’s most awarded and traveled choir. In 2004, he won the 2nd prize of the Asian Composer’s League (ACL) Young Composers Competition held in Jesuraselm, Israel. He was also the Philippine delegate to and featured composer in the 1st I’mPULSE International Music Camp organized by Asia Europe Foundation in (AEF) February 2005.
Alcala earned his BM Composition, magna cum laude, in 2007.
