UP
SURP to hold forum on sustainable housing
Dr. Darin C.
Gunesekera,
a Sri Lankan social entrepreneur, will deliver a Special Lecture
entitled "Bringing the Capital Market Home to the People" at the
University of the Philippines School of Urban and Regional Planning
(UP SURP) in Diliman, Quezon City on August 29, 2008, Friday, from
2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The forum will discuss the Sri Lankan
socialized housing model that situates the people in the property
and financial ladder and makes them stakeholders in urban
regeneration and social transformation. The forum will also serve as
a venue to discuss new trends and strategies in addressing the
housing problems in the Philippines.

August 8, 2008---Professor Ernesto M.
Serote, the SURP Director of
Training,
delivered the fifth
Centennial Public Lecture of the University of the Philippines
School of Urban and Regional Planning.
Dean Amaryllis
T. Torres
of the UP College of Social Work and Community Development and
Dean Zosimo E.
Lee
of the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy presented their
reactions to Prof. Serote's lecture on
“Social Justice and
Urban and Regional Planning”.

26 new environmental planners take oath
July 11, 2008--Twenty-six new
environmental planners (EnPs) took their oath of profession during a
ceremony held at the Club Filipino, Greenhills, San
Juan City. Of the 26 new EnPs, fifteen (15) are from the University of
the Philippines School of Urban and Regional Planning (UP SURP). The
board exam topnotcher who is a staff member and student of the UP SURP called
on the new batch of EnPs to fulfill the important duty of a planner
“to plan not for but plan with” the people.

Former SURP Dean
talks on 'strengthening local planning for development'

June 27, 2008--In
a public lecture, former SURP Dean
Benjamin V.
Carińo
discussed critical issues in planning that account for the very weak
linkage of local planning and development. Entitled
"Strengthening Provincial/Local
Planning and Expenditure Management”,
the
lecture was the fourth in the series of the University of the |
Philippines School of
Urban and Regional Planning
Centennial Public Lectures.

SURP
staff members and students top EnP board exams
June 13, 2008--U.P.
SURP staff
Kristine C.
Follosco topped the 2008 environmental planner (EnP) licensure
examination held on June 11-12. Another SURP staff member, Leoneil
C. Maranan took the 9th place.
Follosco and Maranan are both students of the Master of Arts in
Urban and Regional Planning program of SURP. Results of the
licensure examinations for the past seven years show that UP SURP
graduates, students, and faculty have been consistently topping the
board examinations.

The School
of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) to be a

fields of urban, rural, and regional planning within an
archipelagic and tropical environment comprising of landscapes
and seascapes in a developing economy
The School
of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) as a center for learning
and research in the development of innovative theories, tools,
and sustainable practices in urban, rural and regional planning
that are adapted to developing countries
Mission
SURP’s
mission for the next three years (2007-2010) is to continue to
further enhance its contribution to socioeconomic development
and nation-building by:
Improving the quality of education in the school and producing
highly competent planners.
Extending technical assistance to government, non-government
organizations (NGOs), peoples' organizations (POs), private
sector, and other academic and research institutions on policy
formulation and plan preparation for the development of
localities, regions, and the nation.
Disseminating new knowledge on urban and regional planning
theories, tools, and practices through the school’s publications
and training programs.
Protecting and fighting for the welfare of society particularly
the poor and promoting social justice and equity in the
formulation of development plans and programs.
Thrusts
Enrich
curriculum and establish of areas of specialization;
Upgrade
teaching, training, and research facilities;
Enhance
competencies of faculty and staff on novel and advanced planning
methods and techniques;
Mobilize
resources to improve the school’s physical facilities, support
faculty and staff development, and expand scholarship programs;
Strengthen and widen linkages and networks with international
organizations and foreign universities for joint academic
programs, exchange of faculty, research and training programs;
Increase
enrolment of planners from poor municipalities to the Diploma
course and training programs of the school through cross
subsidies and scholarships.
